October 2009 Congratulations to Dawn Newsome of Moonlight Creative Group, who won the 2009 Charlotte Regional Ethics in Business Award in the Small Business Category. The award recognizes businesses that demonstrate a commitment to ethical business practices in everyday operations management philosophies, response to challenges, treatment of employees and to involvement in civic and environmental concerns. October 2009 Congratulations to Diane Warren, who joined the Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont council as the Vice President of Marketing and Fund Development on October 1st. The newly formed Peaks to Piedmont Council, which came into being on October 1st, is the result of a multi-year initiative leading to the merger of legacy councils across central and western North Carolina. In her new role, Diane will lead efforts to develop consistent brand messaging and marketing communications, as well as achieving targeted council-wide fund raising goals. The Girl Scout Mission is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

September 2009 WE member Edie Kello has been named Director of Marketing for Fiberon, a leading manufacturer of composite decking, railing/fencing and PVC outdoor flooring. Edie joined Fiberon in 2008 as a Senior Product Marketing Manager. She has over 15 years experience in product development and marketing at a diverse range of industries, including companies such as US GreenFiber, Fisher Diagnostics and the Bob Barker Company.

September 2009 On September 21, 2009, Laura Mercer was a featured guest on Charlotte Talks with Mike Collins and spoke about her experiences coping with early onset Alzheimer's. Laura has been a long-time member and former board member of WE, and was a principal at Eric Mower and Associates before her diagnosis. September 2009 Congratulations to Betty Chafin Rash who was recently appointed to the North Carolina Clean Water Management Trust Fund Board of Trustees by President Pro Tem Marc Basnight. The Fund provides grants to state government, local governments and non-profit land trusts and specifically addresses water pollution problems. The Fund provides grants that restore degraded waters, protect unpolluted waters and contribute toward a network of riparian buffers and greenways. In the Charlotte Region, these grants are contributing toward the implementation of the Thread Trail.

September 2009 Janet Fortner, President & CEO of Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region, will be retiring in December after 26 years of service to this wonderful organization. She also will be honored November 7 at the Leadership Charlotte 2009 Legacy Awards Gala. A member of Leadership Charlotte's Class 14, Janet will receive the Schley R. Lyons Circle of Excellence Award.

August 2009 Congratulations to WE member Theresa Payton, who was recently certified as a Six Sigma Black Belt. A Six Sigma Black Belt consists of managing large process improvement projects and passing a certification exam. Six Sigma Black Belts lead problem-solving projects and train, coach and mentor teams doing process improvement work.

August 2009 WE member Jane McIntyre will become the new executive director of the United Way Central Carolinas, the77-year-old community service organization that raises and distributes funds to support 97 charitable agencies in Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Anson, and Union counties as well as the Mooresville-Lake Norman area. She will assume her new position immediately while also transitioning from her current job as chief executive officer of the YWCA Central Carolinas, which is a United Way partner agency. Jane brings nearly two decades of career experience in health and human services organization leadership as well as diverse community service expertise, both as an elected school board official and an active volunteer focused on meeting human needs in the Charlotte area.

August 2009 Congratulations to WE member Felicia Washington, who was appointed to the Board of Trustees for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Felicia, who was sworn in on July 23, received her undergraduate degree from UNC-CH. The 13 member board she joins is responsible for governing UNC-C and is committed to carrying out the University's mission of teaching, research, and public service.

July 2009 Congratulations to Pam Boileau and her team at The Marketing Consortium, who received two Silver Awards from the internationally-acclaimed Communicator Awards. The Marketing Consortium has received nine awards in total in the past year, all of which honor excellence in the marketing and advertising industry.

July 2009 WE member Lynn Boggs has been named the CEO, Girl Scouts Peaks to the Piedmont, Inc. The Peaks to the Piedmont Council is a realignment of council offices in Gastonia, Charlotte, Colfax, Hickory and Asheville through a two-phase merger of these 501-C-3 organizations, beginning in October. As CEO, Lynn will be responsible for merger transition, as well as future growth and operations of girl scouting in Central and Western NC. This area currently serves 43,000 girls with the support of 10,000 volunteers.

June 2009 WE members Cynthia Carlson and Betty Johnson were nominated and then selected to attend the National Security Seminar at the US Army War College in Carlisle in early June. Cynthia and Betty were part of a group of 157 business, government, and community leaders from across the country that joined senior military leaders in a 5-day capstone event of their 10-month curriculum at the War College (the Army's senior educational institution).

The Mecklenburg Times held the inaugural "50 Most Influential Women" event honoring Queen and 49 other women who have made significant contributions to the community and to their professions.

April, 2009 In recognition of her service to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community during 2008, WE member Carol Hardison has been named Charlotte Woman of the Year. Under Carol's leadership as executive director of Crisis Assistance Ministry, the organization raised a record $3.3 million and coordinated more than 53,000 volunteer hours.

Alisa McDonald, V.P. Project Development Services of Duke Energy, received the award for her achievement in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Carol Hardison, Executive Director of Crisis Assistance Ministry, was recognized for her achievement in Community Building and Social Capital.
